Description

Vintage Schatz 59 Carriage Clock – Made in Germany

This Schatz 59 Carriage Clock is a beautiful vintage German 8-day mechanical clock manufactured by Aug. Schatz & Söhne of Germany. The movement is marked Schatz 59 and carries the date code 5 70, indicating manufacture in May 1970.

Presented in an elegant glass-sided carriage-style case with cream and gold decorative detailing, this clock allows the mechanical balance wheel and movement to remain visible while running. The combination of its ornate Roman numeral dial, decorative case and exposed mechanical movement makes it an attractive example of mid-20th-century German clockmaking.

The dial is signed Schatz, marked 8 DAY, and also carries Made in Germany markings.

Original Schatz 59 8-Day Mechanical Movement

At the heart of the clock is the original Schatz Model 59 mechanical movement, manufactured by the well-known German clockmaker Aug. Schatz & Söhne.

The rear plate is clearly marked:

Aug. Schatz & Söhne – Germany – 59

and also:

Two (2) Jewels Unadjusted

The Schatz 59 is an 8-day spring-driven mechanical movement using a visible balance-wheel escapement rather than a traditional pendulum.

Once fully wound, the clock is designed to operate for approximately eight days before requiring rewinding.

The visible balance wheel creates an appealing mechanical display through the lower section of the glass case and is one of the distinctive characteristics of this model.

Fully Cleaned, Serviced & Refurbished

This vintage Schatz 59 Carriage Clock has undergone a comprehensive mechanical service.

The movement has been fully cleaned and serviced, with the appropriate components lubricated using quality Swiss Moebius clock oil.

Importantly, the mainspring has been replaced, addressing one of the major wear components found in older spring-driven mechanical clocks.

The clock itself has also been thoroughly cleaned while preserving its original vintage character.

This means the clock is being offered as a serviced mechanical timepiece rather than an untested or unrestored vintage clock.

Decorative German Carriage-Style Case

The clock is housed in an attractive rectangular carriage-style case with glass panels that allow the movement to be viewed from several angles.

The cream-coloured decorative panels feature raised floral detailing complemented by gold-tone trim and fittings.

The front dial has elegant black Roman numerals, ornate black hands and decorative gold and cream detailing typical of Schatz clocks from this period.

A gold-tone handle/finial at the top completes the traditional carriage-clock appearance.

The glass panels are in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or damage.

Condition

Considering that this clock was manufactured in 1970, it remains in excellent vintage condition.

The glass panels and dial are free from damage, and the movement has been fully serviced.

There are two small areas of loss/chipping to the cream-painted finish on the top panel, which can be seen in the photographs. These are cosmetic only and do not affect the structure or operation of the clock.

We prefer to clearly disclose these age-related marks rather than conceal them, and the photographs form an important part of the condition description.

Overall, the clock presents extremely well for a mechanical clock of this age.

A Collectable German Mechanical Clock

Aug. Schatz & Söhne was one of Germany’s recognised mechanical clock manufacturers and became particularly well known for anniversary clocks, balance-wheel clocks and other decorative mechanical timepieces.

The Schatz 59 is an interesting example of the company’s later mechanical clock production, combining traditional spring-driven clockmaking with a compact balance-wheel movement and decorative glass-sided case.

The clearly identifiable Schatz 59 movement, May 1970 date code and original 8-day dial make this example particularly appealing to collectors who prefer clocks that can be accurately identified rather than anonymous vintage timepieces.

With its original German movement, attractive decorative case and comprehensive recent servicing, this 1970 Schatz 59 Carriage Clock would make an excellent addition to a collection or an attractive mechanical clock for regular display.
