Westminster Chime
The Hermle 340-020 Clock Movement is a genuine German-made mechanical movement designed for mantel and bracket clocks. This example is New Old Stock (NOS), meaning it is an unused original Hermle movement from older inventory rather than a previously installed or restored movement.
The 340-020 is an 8-day spring-driven mechanical movement featuring the traditional Westminster quarter-hour chime and a balance-wheel escapement. Because it uses a balance escapement rather than a pendulum, no pendulum is required.
This movement is an excellent replacement option for compatible clocks originally fitted with a Hermle 340-020 movement.
Direct Replacement for Hermle 340-020
If the back plate of your existing clock movement is stamped 340-020, this movement is designed as the corresponding replacement.
Replacing a worn mechanical movement can often be more practical and economical than extensively rebuilding an old movement, particularly where pivot holes, gears, springs and other components have experienced significant wear.
Before purchasing, we strongly recommend checking the model number stamped on the back plate of your existing movement.
The number should read:
340-020
Please compare the movement dimensions, handshaft length, hammer arrangement and mounting points with your existing movement before ordering.
Westminster Chime
The Hermle 340-020 features the traditional Westminster chime, one of the most recognised mechanical clock melodies.
The movement progressively plays the Westminster melody at each quarter hour, with the complete sequence at the hour followed by the appropriate hour strike.
Five bottom-mounted hammers operate the clock’s chime rods to produce the Westminster melody and hour strike.
Balance-Wheel Escapement – No Pendulum Required
Unlike many traditional mechanical mantel clock movements, the Hermle 340-020 uses a balance-wheel escapement.
This means the movement does not require a pendulum, making it particularly suitable for mantel and bracket clocks designed around a compact mechanical movement.
The balance system also allows the clock’s timing to be regulated without changing pendulum length.

New Old Stock Hermle Movement
This is a New Old Stock Hermle 340-020 movement.
NOS clock movements are unused movements manufactured in an earlier production period and retained in storage. They are particularly useful for restorers and clock owners who want an original-style mechanical replacement rather than converting a traditional clock to quartz.
As New Old Stock items have been stored for a considerable period, minor cosmetic storage marks may occasionally be present. These do not indicate previous use.
Please examine the product photographs carefully as they form an important part of the description.
Suitable for Mantel & Bracket Clocks
The Hermle 340-020 was designed for use in quality mechanical mantel clocks, bracket clocks and similar table clocks requiring a compact Westminster chime movement without a pendulum.
It may also be found in clocks sold under other brand names where Hermle supplied the original mechanical movement.
For this reason, the manufacturer’s name on the clock case itself may differ from the movement manufacturer.
The most important identification is the 340-020 number stamped on the existing movement’s back plate.
Check Compatibility Before Ordering
Clock movement replacement should always be based on the movement number and physical specifications rather than the appearance or brand name of the clock case alone.
Before purchasing, please compare:
- Movement number
- Plate dimensions
- Handshaft length
- Hammer position
- Mounting arrangement
- Winding arbor positions
If you are unsure whether this Hermle 340-020 Clock Movement is suitable for your clock, please contact us and provide clear photographs of the front and back of your existing movement, particularly the numbers stamped into the back plate.
We will be happy to help with identification where possible.
