Antique JUF Schatz 400-Day Anniversary Clock – Germany c.1920s
This exceptional antique German 400-Day Anniversary Clock was manufactured by Jahresuhrenfabrik A. Schatz & Söhne (JUF), one of Germany’s best-known manufacturers of torsion pendulum clocks.
Dating from approximately the 1920s, this is an attractive early example of the traditional German anniversary clock, featuring an ornate brass architectural frame, decorative finials, a white dial with black Arabic numerals and the characteristic four-ball rotating torsion pendulum.
The movement is stamped:
MADE IN GERMANY
Serial No. 113273
The clock combines the elegant appearance for which early German anniversary clocks are known with the fascinating slow rotation of its four-ball pendulum.
Fully Serviced & Restored
This clock has undergone a comprehensive mechanical service and careful cosmetic restoration.
The movement was fully dismantled and thoroughly cleaned, inspected and correctly lubricated before reassembly. The original mainspring had deteriorated with age and has therefore been replaced with a new mainspring.
A new correctly matched suspension spring has also been fitted to ensure reliable operation of the torsion pendulum.
Following servicing, the clock has been carefully adjusted and regulated and is now working perfectly.
Restoration work includes:
- Complete movement dismantling and cleaning
- Full mechanical inspection and servicing
- New mainspring fitted
- New suspension spring fitted
- Movement correctly lubricated
- Clock adjusted and regulated
- Brass case, columns, base and pendulum carefully polished
- Original four-ball torsion pendulum retained
- Original dial retained
- Original glass dome retained
The brass components have been polished and now present beautifully while maintaining the clock’s original period design.
Original Glass Dome
The clock retains its original glass dome, which is particularly important for the appearance and collectability of an early anniversary clock.
The glass is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or scratches.
Dial & Pendulum
The attractive white dial features bold black Arabic numerals, a traditional minute track and original-style black hands, surrounded by a decorative brass bezel.
Below the movement is the classic four-ball torsion pendulum, which slowly rotates backwards and forwards while the clock is operating. This distinctive pendulum is what makes 400-day anniversary clocks so visually appealing.
German JUF / Schatz History
Jahresuhrenfabrik A. Schatz & Söhne, commonly known as JUF and later associated with the Schatz name, was one of Germany’s major manufacturers of anniversary and torsion pendulum clocks.
These clocks were designed to operate for exceptionally long periods between windings, which resulted in the popular names 400-Day Clock and Anniversary Clock.
Early examples such as this are increasingly sought after by collectors, particularly when they retain their original architectural brass case, four-ball pendulum and glass dome.
Condition
Condition: Excellent restored condition
The clock has been mechanically restored and carefully cleaned while retaining its important original components.
The movement is running correctly and keeping time following servicing and regulation. The brass presents beautifully, and the original glass dome is exceptionally well preserved.
As with any genuine antique clock approaching approximately a century in age, minor evidence of age and previous use may remain and should be regarded as part of its history rather than a defect.
